DESOTOS CHRONOGRAPH VALJOUX 72 PANDA DIAL

Desotos was a watch brand produced by Georges Gay SA of Les Bioux, Switzerland, from the 1960s to the 1980s. The brand expanded to include ladies watches but focused primarily on chronographs during the quartz crisis. In 1988, Claude Meylan purchased Desotos and re-launched it under his own name. ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL REF.6105 “OVETTONE” DIAMOND INDEXES

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 6105, produced for a few years starting in 1950, served as the direct predecessor to the iconic Datejust. It stood out with its larger 36mm case, which was quite uncommon during that time. Referred to as the “Big Bubble Back” or “Ovettone,” the Rolex ref. 6105, alongside the contemporary 6104, was the first Datejust powered by the A.296 caliber. While the 6104 had a smooth bezel, the 6105, including the present model, features a fluted bezel. The case is waterproof and constructed in two parts, while the winding crown, known as the “Super Oyster Crown,” enhances water resistance capabilities. The Rolex reference 6105 is highly regarded for its wearability and represents a significant milestone in the Datejust lineage. Due to its collectability, reference 6105 is highly sought after by collectors, particularly rare examples with exceptional dial configurations and excellent preservation, much like the present watch.

This particular Rolex “Ovettone” reference 6105 is a rare and exceptional example. It boasts a unique OCC dial adorned with alternating diamond and gold dagger hour markers, a highly unusual and beautiful configuration. The original Super Oyster Crown, providing water resistance without the need for screwing down, remains intact. The textured cream-colored dial has developed an attractive vintage patina, while the generous case proportions make it appealing to modern tastes. Considering the age of the watch, the yellow gold case is exceptionally well-preserved with clearly visible serial and reference numbers between the lugs, deep hallmarks, and sharp lugs. The period-correct Jubilee bracelet, dated 2-51, shows minimal stretch and is in overall spectacular condition. The A.296 caliber operates flawlessly without any functional flaws. Overall, this is a highly rare and exceptionally preserved 6105 “Ovettone” that deserves a place in a significant vintage Rolex collection.
